Caves: Alaska

Alaskan Caving

Provided by Kevin and Carlene Allred

For those conventioneers who would like to make the trek to Alaska there are no formal caving events offered.  However, Kevin and Carlene Allred are welcoming any cavers coming to Alaska to overnight with them in Ketchikan. They have this to say about caving opportunities and conditions:

We can give advice about conditions and where to go.  Visitors will need raingear, and waterproof tents, rubber boots if they want to keep their feet dry, and warm synthetic clothes under their coveralls.  Food and gas can be bought on Prince of Whales Island in Klawok.  Gas is
available in Whale Pass and some other small towns.  Cavers will need good vertical gear, for caves are in the 30s (F) and are usually wet, so there is no room for equipment inadequacy. Some caves require light dry suits under coveralls.  There are many miles of road to explore on POW Island and beautiful places to see.

For more information contact Kevin and Carlene Allred at carleneallred@kpunet.net or by phone at (907) 225-1116.
